Enrolment Scheme

Maraetai Beach School runs an enrolment scheme. An enrolment scheme is a means of limiting the roll to prevent overcrowding at the school and enabling local students to enrol.

We also run a cohort entry system. Cohort entry refers to children starting school as a group, at the beginning or mid point of a term, after their fifth birthday, as opposed to starting school on their fifth birthday.

Children may attend school when they reach five years of age and enrolments can be made at any time from your child turning 3. It is compulsory in New Zealand for children to attend school from their sixth birthday.

A starting school meeting is held once every term for parents to attend. This session provides information regarding Maraetai Beach School, what to expect when your child starts school and any relevant information on how to assist your child at home in preparation for entry to school. It is also a time to have any other questions you may have answered.

We also provide the 'JumpStart programme' which is optional but is highly recommended. This programme aims to facilitate a smooth transition to Maraetai Beach school, ensuring a pleasant experience for everyone involved. The programme is specifically designed to familiarise children and their families/whānau with the school environment, its people, and its routines. A variety of activities are offered during these sessions to equip children with the necessary skills for a successful start to school.

We also allow for your child to visit their classroom before they start. This allows children to meet their teacher and spend some time with their classmates.

When enrolling your child, it is a requirement for the school to have a copy of your child's birth certificate, if New Zealand born, or other official document of birth date evidence. A copy will be saved and filed to your child’s file.

If you have any questions regarding enrolments please contact our enrolment officer at enrolments@maraetaibeach.school.nz.

Each year, applications for enrolment for the following year from in-zone students will be sought by a specific date which will be published in a daily or community newspaper circulated in the area served by the school. This will enable the board to assess the number of places which can be made available to students who live outside the home zone.

Out of Zone Enrolments

Annual Process

Closing date for out of zone application: October 2024 (date to be announced)

Ballot date: October 2024 (date to be announced)

Applicants notified: October 2024 (date to be announced)

Please note that all out of zone siblings of current pupils must apply as an out of zone enrolment.

Maraetai Beach School Board of Trustees is limited in the number of places it is able to offer students  who are out of zone.

The Board has determined that there are limited spaces available for children in 2024 who are in year 0/1 (turning 5 in 2024)

For out of zone students seeking enrolment at Maraetai Beach School the deadline for the receipt of applications is Friday 13th October. If the number of out of zone applications exceeds the number of places available, students will be selected by ballot following the Ministry of Education defined priority order. If a ballot for out of zone places is required it will be held on Monday 16th October. Parents will be informed of the outcome of the ballot within 5 days of it being held.

Each year the board will determine the number of places which are likely to be available in the following year for the enrolment of students who live outside the home zone. The board will publish this information by notice in a daily or community newspaper circulated in the area served by the school.

The notice will indicate how applications are to be made and will specify a date by which all applications must be received.

Applications for enrolment will be processed in the following order of priority:

First priority
This priority category is not applicable at this school because the school does not run a special program approved by the Secretary.

Second priority
must be given to applicants who are siblings of current students.

Third priority
must be given to applicants who are siblings of former students.

Fourth priority
must be given to any applicant who is a child of a former student of the school.

Fifth priority
must be given to any applicant who is either a child of an employee of the board of the school or a child of a member of the board of the school.

Sixth priority
must be given to all other applicants.

If there are more applicants in the second, third, fourth, or fifth priority groups than there are places available, selection within the priority group will be by a ballot conducted in accordance with instructions issued by the Secretary for Education under Section 11G(1) of the Education Act 1989. Parents will be informed of the date of any ballot by notice in a daily or community newspaper circulating in the area served by the school.

Applicants seeking second or third priority status may be required to give proof of a sibling relationship.
